Brent Primus, the jacked, brash American had one person—one goal—on his mind after punctuating the main event of Bellator Birmingham with a lethal Gogoplata finish.
The Telegraph’s Gareth A. Davies reported that Primus expressed his “healthy obsession” with obtaining another crack at Michael Chandler. Even foregoing another title shot if it means getting his hands on his bloodrival.
“For Primus, ‘Chandler is the belt’. The American, from Oregon, is hellbent on claiming 2-1 over his bitter rival,” Davies wrote.
Primus scored his latest finish Saturday night over the Tim Wilde, of England. The bout did not last long. The two engaged and the Englishman quickly threw the 31-year-old BJJ ace off balance.
Off his back is where Primus shines. Wilde fell into his opponent’s guard and was soon after tapping from the foot choke.
It was a rebound victory for Primus. Last time out he dropped a decision to Chandler at Bellator 212, losing the lightweight championship in the process.
“I want that (third Chandler) fight this weekend,” Primus said before facing Wilde. “I know I can do 10 times better, and I can’t wait to prove it. I know I can knock him out. I just can’t wait to have that fight. I really want to have it soon.”
In the meantime, Chandler is likely more concerned with Patricio Pitbull than a trilogy fight. He battles the former champion on May 11 at Bellator 221.
Bellator has flourished in generating rematches between two budding fighters. The Chandler-Primus antagonism is one of a handful of organic rivalries that has propelled the organization to success, remaining competitive with an adversary of their own in the UFC.
Primus (9-1) will be watching Bellator’s next show with bated breath.
“I want that third fight so badly,” he said. “All I do is think of kicking his ass.”
